David Brody bio
Born in New York City, David Brody did undergraduate work at Columbia University and Bennington College and received an MFA in painting from Yale University. His work has been shown in close to 100 exhibitions in the US and Europe and at international art fairs including the ARCO Art Fair in Madrid, the RipArte Art Fair in Rome, the FAC Art Fair in Lisbon, and at Art Chicago.
He has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Grant, a Basil Alkazzi Award, an Elizabeth Foundation Grant, two Massachusetts Artist Fellowships, and two University of Washington Royalty Research Fund grants. His work has been written about in many publications including The Boston Globe, New Art Examiner, the Spanish journal, Lapiz, and in the Lisbon daily O Público. In Artforum they wrote, "Brody's . . .paintings . . . provide a stunning visual punch . . . rendered with a bravura that is both compelling and hypnotic." In Art in America, Sue Taylor wrote, "A highly intelligent artist . . . Brody is absolutely serious about technique. An emphasis on fine drawing, delicate surfaces and careful considerations of color and light informs all his pictures."
Brody has been a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle since 1996. He also recently wrote and filmed a college-level drawing course for The Great Courses/The Teaching Company. The course, titled “How to Draw”, consists of thirty-six half hour lectures and is available for download and on DVD.
He has had a parallel career in music. He has written five books on traditional music and recorded with a number of artists and groups. He is currently performing original material solo.
