This show presents drawings, photographs, and paintings that artists have made in preparation for other (presumably definitive) pieces; these studies can, sometimes, become works of art although they were not intended to be so by the artists.
All artists recognize this phenomenon: they are not intending to make art, it just happens, and when it does, it’s a welcome if unexpected event. The much admired landscape studies by Constable or many of the Guernica studies by Picasso come immediately to mind.
